How To Reduce Hidden Toxins At Home

7- Strategies For A Toxin-Free Home To Lower Inflammation In Your Body

When trying to improve our health, we usually pay attention to diet, exercise and stress reduction. Nonetheless, one key element that is often overlooked is the home environment itself. We are always mindful of outside pollution and therefore take measures; however, we don’t realise the invisible toxins in our homes.

I understand this personally as a person who has dealt with autoimmunity issues hence I appreciate the importance of having a non-toxic environment. Today, I want to share with you seven effective strategies to reduce hidden toxicity in your home, supporting your body’s natural healing processes and potentially alleviating symptoms of chronic conditions.

Understanding Hidden Toxins

Let’s start by looking at why this matters before offering solutions. Chronic inflammation is a key factor in many health issues, particularly autoimmune conditions. When our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins, the detoxification systems of the body i.e. the kidneys, lungs, skin, liver and intestines are always overburdened. This can lead to increased inflammation and put stress on our immune system whose job is to recognise foreign particles and eliminate them from our body. The immune system can sometimes overreact, developing a tendency to mistakenly attack healthy cells and tissues that can lead to an autoimmune disorder.

These harmful environmental toxins also produce free radicals that can cause limitless health risks – including chronic illness.

While the toxins in the environment are not in our control, but inside our homes, we can look to make changes and reduce the toxin load on our body so that the detoxification systems can work well.

Some common household toxins to watch out for includes BPA and phthalates in plastic products, formaldehyde in furniture and upholstery, lead in old pipes and paint, pesticides in indoor plants, harmful chemicals in household cleaners, mould in damp areas, and carbon monoxide from unvented heaters and gas stoves. By reducing our exposure to these chemicals, we can lower our body’s toxic load and support our overall health.

7- Strategies for a Non-Toxic Home

1. Combat Mould Toxicity

Mould is a silent health hazard that can significantly impact your well-being, especially if you have an autoimmune condition. Here’s how to address it:

  • Regularly inspect your home for signs of mould, paying extra attention to damp areas like bathrooms and basements.
  • Fix any leaks or water damage promptly to prevent mould growth.
  • Use dehumidifiers in prone areas to keep moisture levels in check.
  • If you suspect a serious mould problem, consider professional testing and remediation.

2. Kitchen Makeover

Your kitchen can be a major source of toxins, but it’s also one of the easiest areas to make positive changes:

  • Replace plastic food storage containers with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
  • Switch to non-toxic cookware like cast iron or stainless steel instead of Teflon-coated options.
  • Invest in a high-quality water filter to remove contaminants from your drinking and cooking water.
  • Choose organic groceries, fruits and vegetables when possible to reduce pesticide exposure.
  • Lower the intake of processed, packaged foods and meats to reduce additives, artificial sweeteners and other harmful chemical intake from our diet.

3. Natural Cleaning Products

Many conventional cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can irritate your skin, respiratory system, and contribute to overall toxicity. Here’s how to clean up your cleaning routine:

  • Replace chemical-laden cleaners with natural alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, salt and lemon juice.
  • Look for eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning brands when purchasing ready-made products.
  • Consider making your own cleaning solutions using essential oils and natural ingredients.
  • Schedule a professional deep cleaning at least once a year.

4. Create a Bedroom Sanctuary

Since we spend about a third of our lives sleeping, it’s crucial to make our bedrooms as toxin-free as possible:

  • Invest in organic bedding and pillows to avoid pesticide residues and synthetic materials.
  • Replace pillows annually to prevent buildup of allergens and dust mites.
  • Add air-purifying plants like snake plants or peace lilies to naturally clean the air.
  • Keep electronics out of the bedroom to reduce EMF exposure and improve sleep quality.

5. Personal Care Product Audit

What we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in them. Many personal care products contain harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through our skin:

  • Read labels carefully and avoid ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.
  • Switch to natural skincare and makeup products made with clean, non-toxic ingredients.
  • Consider making your own simple products like body scrubs or face masks using natural ingredients.
  • Gradually replace your conventional products with cleaner alternatives as you run out.

6. Improve Air Quality

The air inside our homes can be more polluted than outdoor air. Here’s how to breathe easier:

  • Invest in a high-quality air purifier with a HEPA filter to remove airborne toxins and allergens or use home diffusers with essential oils to keep the air clean.
  • Open windows regularly to allow fresh air circulation, even in colder months.
  • Avoid synthetic air fresheners and opt for essential oil diffusers or natural alternatives like simmering herbs on the stove.
  • Keep indoor plants to naturally purify the air and increase oxygen levels.

7. Reduce Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs)

While the long-term effects of EMF exposure are still being studied, many people report improved well-being when reducing their exposure:

  • Turn off Wi-Fi routers at night or when not in use.
  • Keep cell phones and other electronic devices away from your body, especially while sleeping.
  • Use wired internet connections when possible instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Consider using EMF shielding products in areas where you spend a lot of time.

Embracing a Non-Toxic Lifestyle

Creating a non-toxic home environment is a journey, not a destination. Start with small, manageable changes and gradually work your way through different areas of your home. Each step you take supports your body’s natural healing processes and can help reduce symptoms of chronic conditions.

In my own experience with autoimmune disease, making these changes not only helped alleviate my symptoms but also gave me a sense of control over my environment and health. It’s about reducing the overall toxic load and supporting our immune system to function optimally.

Remember, creating a non-toxic home is just one piece of the puzzle. A holistic approach to health also includes proper nutrition, stress management, regular exercise, and working with healthcare professionals to address your specific needs.

I encourage you to start implementing these strategies and observe how you feel. You might be surprised at the positive changes you experience, from better sleep to increased energy and reduced symptoms.
